The Dormer A553 jobber length, through-coolant, ADX style drill bit is made of high-speed steel (HSS) and cobalt with a TiAIN physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating. The web is designed for optimum rigidity and stability. The volute point geometry provides efficient cutting action and positional accuracy. The convex cutting edge aids in the production of small manageable chips. Helical holes located at the drill point allow for effective coolant delivery. Designed for high productivity, excellent swarf (chips, debris, or waste resulting from drilling) removal, and accurate holes to H9 tolerance. Best usage in numerical control (NC) or computer numerical control (CNC) applications where high productivity and accurate holes is needed. It is suitable for drilling to a depth up to five times the diameter of the drill. The shank diameter is the same as the drill size. It was designed for drilling holes into a wide variety of substances with best performance in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, unalloyed titanium, copper, aluminum magnesium, and synthetic materials (thermoplastics).
With a through-coolant system, there are different ways to get coolant through the drill bit. As the coolant flows through the coolant holes, it flushes swarf away from the cutting zone and moves them along the drill flutes until they exit the hole. The key factors are coolant volume and pressure. The benefits of providing coolant internally directly to the cutting edge include higher cutting speeds, higher feed rates, longer tool life, less frequent sharpening, and a superior finish. The coolant assists in clearing the chips from the cutting edge and its pressure forces the swarf along the lines of the flutes, which allow for drilling greater depths without repeated withdrawal of the drill to clear swarf. Higher than normal speeds and feeds are needed to help ensure chips to curl and break, instead of producing long strings. The A553 series has a faster-than-normal helix angle of 35 to 45 degrees for efficient swarf evacuation.
Titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) is a rose-colored ceramic coating that is tough and has high oxidation stability, and extends the life of the tool. It becomes self-lubricating at higher speeds, making it ideal for cutting without coolant (also called "dry machining"). Good for machining titanium, nickel-based alloys, cast iron, and stainless steel. The Balzers’ Futura Nano PVD process was used to apply the coating. The Nano structure of this coating means improved coating adhesion and more uniform wear.
