Convex-Axial Feeding knurling wheels have greatly improved the ability of novice and experienced CNC lathe operators to produce quality knurled parts on their machines. All of the inch convex wheels are made from hi-cobalt steel and have an "extended wear" treatment. The unique full form radiused edges of the wheels significantly reduce the knurling forces in both the "X" and "Z" axis. As compared to using a standard knurl with a chamfer on the edges, the convex wheel is similar to a "canoe" slicing through the water as opposed to a "pram" plowing through. Also, because of the smaller surface area on first contact, these tools normally penetrate deeper into the workpiece on the first revolution which tends to reduce "double tracking" problems. The above typically results in longer tool life, better looking parts and higher productivity.
Remember that this type knurling wheel is designed only for axially feeding to produce a knurl length that is wider than the wheel being used. If the diameter of the part is less than 1/2", we would normally recommend using a straddle type two die holder. For work 3/4" and larger, a single or two die bump should be suitable.
